The AM2, AM2S and AM2E Practical Assessments Explained

​The AM2S should be taken by Electrotechnical Apprentices who are working towards the Apprenticeship standard and the AM2 for those who are undertaking the JIB Mature Candidate Assessment. The AM2E will be available at NET test centres from the 1st of October 2020. The AM2E is for learners on the new 2346-03 Experienced Worker Assessment.

The AM2, AM2S and AM2E is a practical assessment commonly taken as the end-point assessment of an Electrotechnical training program. It is a 2-3 day practical assessment taken at a NET approved test centre.

The difference between AM2, AM2-S and AM2-E

AM2 Sections

  • Section A1: Safe Isolation and Risk Assessment – 45 mins
  • Section A: Composite Installation – 8.5 hours
  • Section B: Inspection, Testing and Certification – 3.5 hours
  • Section C1: Safe Isolation – 30 mins
  • Section C2: Fault Diagnosis and Rectification – 2 hours
  • Section D: Assessment of Applied Knowledge – 1 hour

AM2S and AM2E Sections

  • Section A1: Safe Isolation and Risk Assessment – 45 mins
  • Section A: Composite Installation – 10 hours
  • Section B: Inspection, Testing and Certification – 3.5 hours
  • Section C: Safe Isolation – 30 mins
  • Section D: Fault Diagnosis and Rectification – 2 hours
  • Section E: Assessment of Applied Knowledge – 1 hour
  • The extra time allowed for the AM2S and AM2E if for the installation of a small section of Steel Conduit and PVC Conduit.

AM2, AM2S and AM2E

  • Candidates will need to contact TESP (https://www.the-esp.org.uk) if they have an AM2 certificate, for advice before proceeding with the 2346-03.
  • If the AM2 was achieved before 2010, a decision on whether this will be recognised or not, is still to be made for learners proceeding with the 2346-03 EWA.

IMPORTANT: Any candidates that have already achieved the AM2 should enrol on to the NVQ 2356-99 with XS Training and should register before 30/11/2020.

  • After the 30/11/2020, candidates who have already achieved the AM2 and have a level 2 and 3 Electrotechnical certificate, can do the 2357 NVQ.
  • For those learners with over 5 year’s experience, with the AM2 certificate, but don’t have the level 2 and 3 Electrotechnical certificate, will need to do the 2346-03 EWA. The learner must contact TESP to discuss how the AM2 can be used towards the 2346-03.

The AM2, AM2S and AM2E Online Test

You need to achieve 21 out of 30 questions to pass on the AM2 online exam – 70%. (1 hour allowed).

You’ll be assessed on your application of knowledge associated with the following:

  • Health and Safety
  • BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations
  • Building Regulations

You will be provided with the following publications:

  • BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations
  • IET Guidance Note 3. Inspection & Testing
  • IET On-Site Guide
  • A Short Guide to the Building Regulations.

You are not allowed any other documentation.

The Experienced Worker Assessment

The Experienced Worker Assessment is also recognised in the as equivalent to an industry apprenticeship. Electrotechnical Assessment Specification

The Experienced Worker Assessment is built up of the following;

  • Candidates must have 5 years + site experience
  • Provide evidence of experience and competence in all areas identified on the Skill Scan, equivalent to the Level 3 electrotechnical apprenticeship
  • Level 3 Performance Units (2346-03) 
  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
  • Initial Verification Qualification (2391-50 or 2391-52)
  • AM2E

Achievement of the Experienced Worker Assessment and the AM2E meets the criteria for an ECS gold card application.
