We have numerous applicants asking if they need their AM2. Most of these have been working in the industry for years and have been misinformed that they need their AM2 along with their NVQ to gain JIB grading.
At the moment, the AM2 is part of the apprenticeship framework and those undertaking an apprenticeship will have to take their AM2 in their final year to successfully complete their apprenticeship.
The AM2 is aimed at “new entrants” to the industry such as an apprentice or trainee. If you are an experienced electrician (practicing operative) you DO NOT need to take your AM2.
However, all this is about to change shortly. Anyone registering for their NVQ 3 Electrical Installation or Maintenance after 31st July 2012 will also have to take their AM2 as the new Electrotechnical Diploma embeds the AM2 within it. This means that you will not be able to gain your NVQ 3 Electrical without also having to undertake your AM2, regardless of experience and qualifications.
Our advice is to register for the existing NVQ before the final registration date of 31st July 2012 (unless City & Guilds extend this date) and avoid the unnecessary and additional expense of the AM2. Registration before 31st July 2012 means you can complete the NVQ anytime up until July 2015.

I have my am2 and my instructor said have not complete my nvq yet is it possible not to get my gold card without the nvq.
Hi Ibrahim, unfortunately you will need to get your NVQ Level 3 first in order to be eligible to apply for your Gold Card. The NVQ Level 3 displays and proves your practical competency to the ECS / JIB Board who grant the Gold Card. If you have OVER 5 years experience then the NVQ 2346 qualification will probably be your best route, or if it’s LESS THAN 5 years then the NVQ 2357 will probably be the best way to go. Please do get in touch by phone or Contact Form if you’d like to know more. All the best
Hi
I’m doing the NVQ ciry and guilds 2346 qualification (experienced route).
If I do my NVQ only. Would this be enough or would I need to take my AM2e ASAP? Would I be able to do the AM2E at a later day e.g in next 2-3 year after completing my NVQ experience route.
Please explain
Ok, so I have a gold card (Approved) and a Managers card. But 19yrs ago when I first trained as an adult trainee, I was told I didn’t need my Am2, so I didn’t do it (why would you). I’m now told I need it to go self employed and join some scheme providers. Where do I stand and which Am2 would I need to do? I have nvq3 etc
Hi Wayne RC
What NVQ Level 3 have you got? If you look at the certificate it will state a code. I can then let you know which of the following you need – AM2, AM2e or AM2s. It’s most likely going to be the AM2 as the AM2e is linked to the 2346 NVQ Experienced Worker Assessment and the AM2s is linked to the 5357 Apprenticeship Framework.
The NVQ 2356-99 needed the completion of the AM2
The NVQ 2357 needed the completion of the AM2.
If you want to privately contact me at jamie@xstraining.com I will help as much as I can.

Hi,
I have C&G 236 Part 1 & 2, C&G 2391 Inspection & testing, 18th Edition & HNC Electrical & Electronic engineering yet I’ve been told I cannot get a gold card.
What else do I need?
Hi Martin, thanks for your question.
Everyone will need to gain the NVQ Level 3 and AM2/E/S in order to gain their JIB Gold card. The only exceptions are those who completed an apprenticeship before 1996 or those who complete their NVQ 2356-31. If you’d like to complete the online application form at the following link – https://www.xstraining.com/online-application-form/ – we’d be happy to get back to you about your further requirements
